I am very fortunate in owning a fantastic Hank Marvin Autograph Strat, No 144. I understand that there were only 48 Autographs ever made, I believe that the other 114 are HM Signature Strats. So I am curious to know where the other Autographs and the Signatures are located. Am I correct in saying that Hank owns the first two Autographs that were made? What are the numbers of these? Does he also have the first Signature? I need you guys to help me trace as many of the other Autographs and Signatures as possible. I know tonybiker has a record of several of these guitars and their owners, perhaps he could start the ball rolling. It will be very interesting to see how many we can locate. Thanks in anticipation, for your help. Everyone who traces either an Autograph or a Signature will be entered into a draw for a FREE set of Adagio Premium Series Strings, Gauge 10.
One entry for each number found - ie find 3 numbers and you have 3 entries etc.
Sorry Tony, your existing several records don't count in the draw - you'll have to locate some others to have a chance of winning!

Hi Clive.
An interesting post. The two guitars you mention, the 'signature' and the 'autograph' are the authorised USA made Custom Shop's and should not get confused with the Japanese signatures made in 1995/6. The history is, the signature batch came out in 1993 and quickly sold at £1799 with numbers 001 to 101, or that's what the numbers should of been because I have seen 106 and that is a signature strat. In 1995, Geoff Baker of Tempo Music, also known as the Flying Pig, commissioned what should of been a further 100 HBM authorised, but this series was called the 'autograph' and differed to the signature in quality, AAA birds-eye neck was one of the differences, but this series cost £2999, almost twice as expensive. I understand that only a short run was completed and the latest serial number following on from the signature series is 164. I know the latest signature was 106, so the autograph should of started at 107 onwards, so the autograph is rarer than the signature.
Of interest, Fender brought out, what is now called 'the premature' in 1989 to coincide with The Shadows tour of the same year. This strat had Fender lace sensors fitted (not the DiMazzio FS1 and Seymour Duncan SSL1's) combination which he was using at the time, so Hank refused to get involved. The problem was a number of them were in dealers shops and some had been sold, the figure mentioned was approx ten sold. Despite requests some of the guitars escaped and these days bring high prices, £10,000 being a fair estimate. There was a rumour that the built guitars went back to Fender and turned into signature strats, but I don't buy that one, the body maybe but the neck on the premature was nothing special and the signatures starts that followed in 1993 was a completely different guitar.
I was told way back in 1993 that the first two signatures went to Hank and he still has them. I was also told by Geoff Baker that Hank had the first autograph later on.
There are also a couple of dodgy ones hanging about which I have records on. Anyone considering one of these guitars should do so with great caution. If you are interested and find one just check with me, I may just have some history on it and some of the history is not good.
I have a lot more than several records/history's of these guitars, the number I know about being nearer 30, so I am interested where the rest areas well.

maybe people would be reluctant to reveal the whereabouts of a guitar of that value?

Clive, I have a Custom Shop HM Autographed Strat #152. It is in the Canadian Prairies and it is and has been played a lot, many musician friends say it is the best and most forgiving guitar they have played. One other thing we have in common is you are located not far from my home town of Beverley. I played in a couple of band in Hull in the early and mid 60's If you are from that area we could swap notes on the band of the 60's from Humberside.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the post my friend. It sounds like you're like me, you'd rather play the guitar than keep it for the value. Is it in it's original, untouched state with the DiMazio and S/Duncan pickups?
Beverley is a beautiful place - full of history. I'm about 45 miles or so from there.
What's the weather like at the moment in the Prairies - I believe it's very arid and dry?

Yes the guitar is exactly as it was when I bought it in 1995 in London. I was on Vacation and returning to Beverley from Devon so I made a 'slight' detour to London and bought it. It still has the 'plastic protective sheet' over the white plastic plate on back where the wammy springs are. I also have the untouched pick plate that came with it, that also has Hanks autograph in 'gold lettering' on it. I've passed by Grimsby many times over the past years when visiting Beverley. I now only have one friend left (he died last Xmas) who was his wife she's still in that area in Driffield. I also have a long time friend who I keep in touch with in Hull, he owns 'Antones' a music shop specialising in antique guitars, located on Beverley Road Hull. He still plays (bass) in a band in Hull. We played together for 2 years in a Blues Band in Hull 1964 to 1966.
You should check out my threads as I posted a couple of songs that I recorded using the Strat. If you cannot access them on 'Box' let me know and I will send you the link.

Small world as they say Dave. My brother lived in Beverley for a while a few years back (his wife is from there) & I spent a fair bit of time running around the huge training areas north of Edmonton when the Army kindly funded a couple of jaunts over their to play around in the snow. I remember causing a bit of a minor sensation in the local dance hall in Wainwright the first time over there as I knew the chords to most of the chart stuff that hadn't quite made it across to Canada then plus some other stuff they didn't know about.........for some strange reason "Hermans Hermits" were very popular at that time ('66 & '67) Very, very nearly didn't make it back the second time I was there, just fell in love with the place ................& by happy co-incidence bumped into a guy called Michael who chose to stay there for keeps, at one of our monthly re-unions at a local pub who was over visiting & looking up old friends. I'll make it back over there one of these days to see how Canada is getting along without me Dick.

I've lived in Toronto 6 years, Edmonton 10 years, Saskatoon 11 years, Nassau Bahamas 8 years and retired to small town Saskatchewan in 2007. So you were Army ! I hear there are many stories of the Brits on R & R in Edmonton....maybe you were one of those stories !!! We had an awfully cold winter last year started in early November 2013 and lasted to early May 2014. It was minus 50 one day and for about 2 months we never got over minus 25 deg. However summers are good; this one was a bit wet in June but has been great since mid July and we are still 22 deg which is strange for mid October. I even grow wine grapes in my garden (my other hobby). They are just ready to be picked this week as we have had a couple of frosts and the grapes need that to sweeten. An old lady made 20 bottles of wine last year from a small sample and I still have 2 bottles left. It used to be much drier here a few years back, but this climate change stuff has dampened us down quite a bit. I too find it strange that Herman's Hermits were so popular especially in the USA..mind you down there they will listen to anything (sorry if you are a Yankee fan)... Herman should have stayed as Len Fairclough's son on Coronation Street !!!!
I haven't been over there since Dec 2010, but I still have a cousin in Devon, an Ex wife in Bury and a few other friends, so I am hoping to get over in 2015.

I played an Autograph on our DVD for our 'No Retreat' recording though not on the recording itself, that was a sunburst USA DeLuxe. The Autograph was owned by a friend at the time who ordered it new back in the nineties, but he asked me to sell it for him which I did to a guy in France back in 2008 ish for £3000. I can't remember his name, but back then I'm sure he was around on SM quite a bit. The only memory of it is on our DVD.
