There was a lot of guff spoken on SM about the relative merits of the tape Meazzi versus the drum Meazzi so I thought I'd have a crack at making a drum type unit. There's a fair bit of engineering involved which is up my street so here's the situation as is....... A couple of items have to be taken tongue in cheek, like the spring and the innards on a barometer, they were chucked into the picture to add erm.... charisma. It's all to be done on a shoestring, pensions don't fund genuine Meazzi recording heads for example. I've assembled so far, a motor, this was from a direct drive record deck so variable speed and no belt although having got it from the USA realised that it doesn't quite work as it should and there are no schematic diagrams so there's work to do on that. I scrounged some 20mm aluminium and turned a 125mm diameter drum from it. I got a bag of ferric oxide off ebay and next task is to coat the drum with it somehow. I read up and the originals seemed to have been painted on with laquer as the 'glue' but I might be wrong about that. I got a bag of mono recording heads from Germany, probably the wrong impedance but no circuitry as yet but I'm not spending much money, I don't even know if it will work. A big thick book from the library so that I look clever. What else ? I've forgot but here's the picture........

Hi Ecca It looks as if you are all set to go then, I must admit it looks to be a bit of a headache for me if I were to tackle it, but I'm more than interested to hear how you get on with this Ted

It appears to be Fe3O4 - magnetite. My goodness you really can buy anything on eBay

Hi Ecca, I wonder if perspex dissolved in acetone would work as a glue for the ferric oxide particles? It's easier to dissolve in chloroform but the danger is you might go to sleep before you can apply it. After all they glue artificial hip joint stems into the thigh bone with something very similar, methyl methacrylate. Good thing is if it doesn't work you can always dissolve it off again to try something else. Handbook of Ferro-Magnetic Materials looks a hefty tome, if you get stuck you'll have to call on Philip, he's the retired Physics teacher (LOL). Seriously though I've always thought there was a load of guff talked about the differences in disc and tape mechanism Meazzi echo machines. The bigger difference was when they went to transistor and the treble had almost disappeared on every one I heard.

You certainly can Phil, but even if I had won last nights lottery I would not have been able to buy the most expensive item that was ever sold on eBay : The most expensive item ever sold on eBay is, by and far, the Gigayacht, an ultra luxury yacht created by Frank Mulder of Mulder Design. Consider the following features: Master suite on the deck level Two-person cabin for children Panoramic windows Sixteen oversized guest cabins Salon Cinema room Fitness gym Office space Helicopter garage Retractable elevator Multi level VIP suites The yacht measures 123.4 meters, with a cruising speed of 16 knots and maximum speed of 20 knots. It is made of steel and features Caterpillar engine. The yacht itself can be bought from the manufacturers for $196.5 million. When it was first listed however, the yacht had yet to be made, and delivery was set for some future date. Only one person made a bid however, and it was for a mere $10. Mark Cook made the bid. Not to be disheartened, the manufacturer then re-listed the item on eBay. It set a price on the Gigayacht for $168 million, though the bidding itself would only be for a 50 percent deposit for the sea vehicle. That means they were expecting a minimum bid of $84 million. A Buy It Now price of $85 million was also set for those who wanted to forego the bidding process and just buy the Gigayacht outright. Surprisingly, an anonymous bidder was able to meet the price. The manufacturer then said that the finished value of the Gigayacht would be a minimum of $170 million. Speculations arose as to who had purchased the most expensive item ever sold on eBay. Some point to Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire who made his wealth in the Russian oil industry and in the controversial debt-for-shares scheme that was popular in the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Abramovich has since made a name for himself in the United Kingdom as the ambitious owner of Chelsea Football Club, an English Premier League team that is based in London. Since his purchase of the club, Abramovich has spared no expense in buying the best players regardless of the price, as well as signing up the most expensive managers of the game. He has achieved a high level of success as his team has gone on to win several domestic football league crowns and cup titles. A known collector of luxury yachts, he owns the 162.5-meter Eclipse, one of the largest privately-owned yachts in the world with two swimming pools and helipads, a cinema and a submarine; the 115-meter Motor Yacht Luna, considered as the world’s largest expedition yacht; and the Sussurro, a 50-meter yacht moored in the Caribbean. Abramovich also used to own the Pelorus, a 115-meter yacht that was given to his ex-wife as part of their divorce settlement; the Le Grand Bleu, a 112-meter expedition yacht with a sports dock and swimming platform that was given to his friend Eugene Shvidler; and the Ecstasea, an 85-meter Feadship with high cruising speed that was sold to an unnamed buyer a few years ago. The Gigayacht should be a great addition to Abramovich’s fleet. Looks like the ex wife got a lot more than I did from the divorce settlement, I ended up with a 10 year old Citroen BX that wouldn't even float

I've thought about making a 'sludge' of the magnetite mixed with Tekaloid clear coach enamel ( of all things ) Why ? because I've got a tin of it . I used it as the finish on a bass guitar I built once. It's almost glass hard when dry and I've somehow to grind the coating when it's gone off. My shed is blinkin freezing in the winter so I'm a bit dubious about how it will dry and I'm far too miserable to put the heating on. I intend to slowly rotate the drum in the lathe, it's got an inverter controlling it so I can set the revs really slow and brush this mix on while it is rotating and leave it running so it dries evenly. The 4 winding motor control will have to be ditched I think, I have no diagrams, and no part numbers found on the net, it's from the seventies I think. I have a couple of stepper motor controllers though that should do it as long as I put a decent flywheel on to smooth it out.

Well Sandra, 'three yachts Abramovic' certainly tops 'two jags prescott' and that's for sure

Yes but Prescott affected us all in the UK more than Abromovic did, unless you are a football fan. I wonder if two jags would have ever got a job as a steward on one of Abromivc's boats

Its definitely a big boat, I wonder how it compares in size to the old Brittania that we used have as the royal yacht
