I just joined this forum. I have been a Shadow fan since I first heard Apache in 1960 and gave up the violin for a guitar. I played a Burns Vista Sonic in the 60's (couldn't afford a Strat then). Gave up playing in 1969 to enter the corporate world and in 1989 I started playing again. I have two Strats one is a US sunburst lace Strat I bought in 1989 and then in 1995 I bought the HM Autographed Custom Strat #152 while I was in London on vacation. All my musician friends think it is the best, most forgiving guitar they have ever played. Now retired I play mainly for my own amusement, although now and again I play at a Jam which is mainly blues. I found this site on a web search and there is some interesting stuff on this site. Once I get more familiar I will try to post a sound file from a CD I made which is mainly blues, old 60's rock and a couple of Shadows instrumentals.
Dave
(EDIT) Hi Dave
I have transferred your posts and any replies here as you had placed them within another members thread by mistake - Ted

Hi Dave Always good to see a new face "blues, 60's rock & a couple of instro's" ..............sounds just up my street You don't have to be mad to be amongst us lot here, but it does help to understand the "humour" I think most of us of a "certain age" have had some form of hiatus from guitars, mine lasted from early '67 until around 2008 (2012 before I ventured back into playing in public) Plenty going on here............just join in when your ready Cheers Dick.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome. I suppose the majority of HM and Shad's fans are of that 'certain age'. I did find it interesting that when I watched the Cliff and the Shads 50th anniversary concert on DVD, that I managed to get only a few weeks after the actual concert, that the audience was far louder in it's applause for the Shads first set, than for the opening numbers of Cliff. Out here in the open Canadian prairies I was lucky to find a guitar player and a bass player who both being Brit expats, were also Shad fans and we did several sets at a Jam in the 90's with a drummer who learnt the stuff a month before (not easy to replicate Brian Bennett). The few sound files I listened to on this site seem to be over plays of backing tracks... all mine were recorded live with the other 3 guys. Most people over here even my age are not familiar with Cliff or the Shadows, one lady asked me if Cliff was the same as the Cliff Richards she had heard, I explained that he is called Richard and not Richards. I now am quite happy that over here the Shads are truly our British band, and not sullied by the American hype. It is amazing how many bands sprung up in the early 60's because of Hank and the Shads, most people over here are oblivious to that fact which was a major reason for the British invasion in the 60's.
I see that most sound file posts are done through a supplementary site called 'Box'. It isn't obvious how you do that I thought it would be nice just to attach a file to a message, as you do on most social network sites.

Hi Dave Welcome to the forum I would just like to clarify that we are not a social network site, we are a private forum created to discuss instrumentals & often other styles of music. You can attach files within the forum but there is a size limit of 1mb which is too small for your average sound file this is why many members favour using sites like box net to store their sound files.

Oh no just what the forum needs, another brilliant guitarist just as I am trying to pluck up the courage to post a recording of me trying to play something Only joking Dave, all are welcome of course and we need a balance of good players to offset the bad ones like me

For a split second when I first opened the page and saw your avitar Dave, I thought, blimey Sir Cliff has signed up Welcome to the site, looking forward to any old stories you may have from your former playing days, and if you do any home recording, let's hear the sound files. Cheers, Graham

The resemblance is only in the face I can assure you. My religion and marriages prove the absolute opposite to Sir Cliff., but I have been a life long fan of him and the Shads. I enclose the link that I hope works to the BOX where I placed two sound files one is the classic Blue Star off the Shads first LP and the other is Mean Streak an early single by Sir Cliff and the Shads that I arranged in a more Bluey format. I am playing lead on Blue Star and the band behind comprises of three good friends and local musicians. I sing as well (or try to) comes from 8 years as a chorister and song man on a Cathedral choir in Yorkshire. The band behind me on the song comprises of the same guitar player on slide guitar, the same bass player but a different drummer. I play rhythm on this as well as the closing lead break. Hope you enjoy this. https%3A//app.box.com/s/76ngbk25b00hamu44tbi
