I don't mean an RC Flight Sim. I have one in my PC already - great fun for RC Flyers who don't want to go out in the cold. I mean a Pilots eye view flight simulator (as if looking through the windscreen) that I can use with my RC Tx. Any ideas??? Ian

I do not anything about RC stuff Ian but the closest thing I have found to flying a real plane, apart from the session I had in a full motion 737 simulator, was at a friends recently while helping to set up his flight simulator controls and software. We tried MS Flight Sim and X plane 10 but I think the best one for realism is Prepar3D and he is using it with something called TrackIR. Its not cheap, if you get all the available stuff for it but it works something like this video shows : I liked the single seater jet too, I don't think it was this one as I think it was an F15 but it looked similar to this : When Rick (fiestared 13) gets back from Oz he will probably have more info about it as it was him that told me about Prepar3d and the TrackIR

Hi folks and thank you for coming up with all sorts of ideas. The CAA info is for those planning to fly these drone things which one day will cause a Calamity when they fly one into the path of an incoming Jet. I kid not - an official NearMiss was declared recently at Heathrow because of such an occurrence. All these (apart from the clever Spy Hawk) are too expensive for something I just want for a bit of Fun. Background - I was a fully qualified RC aerobatic Flyer with A and B Certs and had an Instructor qual too. Then I developed an eye tumour, which necessitated on safety grounds, that I no longer fly at the Model Airshows AND it also cocked up my Student PPL into the bargain. So I was looking for something to sort of bridge the gap. I DO have a good RC Sim on mu PC and its good fun - I would just have liked to be able to flick something in its program to be able to "see" the landing from the Models POV. cheers ian

hi ian..... the only one I know is Microsoft flight sim X that you can fly in the cockpit and also see and land a plane from the outside view. I have it on my pc. also aerofly deluxe has a few settings on it to fly and land a model aircraft. I use them when not flying to keep my hand in when the weather is bad to fly outside. I normally fly turbine jets as well as other aircraft when out on my flying days. ian h

Hi Ian,
I used to fly RC aircraft too but have now had a Private Pilot's licence for the last 9 years. At home I use MS Flightsim 2004 (the one before Flightsim X) in Windows 7 with all the scenery and airport packs. All the planes can be flown through the windscreen I and found it invaluable when learning my navigational training. Good for landings too. Ok, you don't get the sensations of the aircraft of course, but still pretty good.

I din't realise there were so many real, and simmer/RC pilots here. Obviously music and flying go hand in hand. There used to be a music board on the "Flyer Forum" I am a member of, but now gone, also a member of PPRuNe. (Professional pilots rumor network)
Now in my 37th year of flying and never been out of currency yet. My regular steed is a fully equipped with auto-pilot PA28 Archer II. Had planned to fly to Prague via Frankfurt (or near)this May, but due to, as usual in aviation problems do arise.
I would be interested in others flying stories. Maybe a "pilots" section?/thread.

Ok then Back in the mid 70s when I was flying Cherokees out of Blackpool I was returning to the airfield one afteroon and called the tower at around ten past one requesting clearance to join overhead giving my ETA of 10 minutes, this is with a hand held mic with the old speaker in the cockpit roof with very poor audio quality and lots of hissing and crackling and me being an amateur pilot with not that much experience of radios other than dabbling with CBs and having presumably a good northern Lancashire accent in common with 90% of the other radio traffic I was listening to at that time interspersed with lots of errs and ahems, I was given clearance to join overhead. I placed the mic back in its clip and then I heard probably the clearest and most professional voice I had ever heard when flying near Blackpool, obviously this guy was not using a cheap hand held mic with a tinny speaker in the cockpit roof. He said " Good afternoon Blackpool, this is red arrows leader requesting joining instructions with an ETA of 1320". He was given clearance to join overhead and I thought oh I am going to be able to watch them coming in and possibly have a chat with them. I then realised that 1320 was the same as ten past one plus ten minutes I continued to the airfield and called when overhead and was given clearance to descend to circuit height and join the circuit and a little later after calling finals was given clearance to land. Just as I was about to flare for landing there was a roar on each side of me as all the red arrows flew past me, 5 Gnats on each side 9 display plus their reserve that they used to have back in those days, they then peeled off to each side and flew round again before reforming into single file and landing behind me and followed me as I led them all off the runaway to the apron to park up. So there I was, the unpaid leader of the Red Arrows for maybe 7 or 8 minutes. They would probably get courtmartialed if they did it today as they were definitely in violation of several air laws and airfield protocols, even just doing a fly past just as I was about to touchdown was naughty but then to actually land while I was still on the runway could have been dangerous but I enjoyed it and did get to meet up with them Incidentally when you said Mike, Maybe it is because we all like The Shadows and especially Apache and Piper had lots of their planes with Indian names and connections : Pa23 Apache Aztec Navaho Chieftain Cheyenne Pa24 Comanche Pa30/39 Twin Comanche Pa38 Tomahawk Pa28 Cherokee Series Pa28R Cherokee Arrow Cherokee 6 Lance & Saratoga Pa34 Seneca Pa44 Seminole

Great story Sandra, I was returning to Biggin Hill after completing all the X country time I needed just before the air show back in the 70's and being asked to hold over Swanley to let the Reds land in front of me.
It was no contest as they had about a couple of knts extra speed over my little plane. After they landed I was on final and heard the p51 mustang at the hold for 29 being told "hold pos for the landing traffic", after the roll out he took off over me, and immediately went inverted and did a bunt to vertical. I was told later it was Ray Hannah flying it for the first time and rehearsing for the air show next day.
The only time I visit Biggin now is when I do the odd ferry flight there for maintenance or just retrieval.

PS: your right about all the Indian names for the Piper fleet, I was lucky enough to get a guided tour around the Piper factory at Vero Beach Florida a while ago, & as that is Indian territory it's no coincidence.

I never realised the connection before, thanks for explaining that Mike Ray Hannah was another great display pilot I have watched many times but never got the chance to meet or speak to unfortunately. They used to say that there are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old, bold pilots. It looks like even great Spitfire display pilots don't live that long either
